Kids Korps singers with song writer and director Andrea Carrier

Kids Korps’ annual Super Star Gala, RED HAUTE TANGO, took place under a bed of stars at the beautiful Grand Del Mar Hotel on Friday, May 6^th. Nearly 300 people gathered to enjoy fine wine, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and the dance, all with the flavor and spirit of Argentina and Tango.

The evening started off with a fiery tango performance by Dancing with the Stars’ Yesenia Adams with her partner Paul Barris.

Following the performance, audience members were treated to a special performance of an original song by Kids Korps Chapter Leader Andrea Carrier called “The Giving Tree,” performed by talented young Kids Korps members. The inspiration for this wonderful entertainment came from Kids Korps 2010 gala honoree and current chapter leader, Andrea Carrier, an accomplished singer and song writer. In order to create a memorable and meaningful Kids Korps song, she wrote “The Giving Tree Song” for this year’s gala.

Andrea rehearsed and directed a group of young volunteers to sing and dance as a kick-off to the evening’s festivities. Under Andrea’s direction, the performers captured the spirit of giving that is at the heart of Kids Korps. Kids Korps board member, Dr. Keith Kanner’s talents were put to work as he created a fun look into the lives of Kids Korps volunteers through a lively and colorful slide show of young people making a difference in the lives of others throughout San Diego.

As part of its annual tradition, Kids Korps presented the National Leadership Award to five individuals and organizations that embody Kids Korps’ mission:

Dana Knees & family – Chapter Leadership Award

McLaren Martin – Teen Leadership Award

Rancho Santa Fe Rotary Club – Community Leadership Award

SDG&E/ Sempra Energy Foundation – Corporate Leadership Award

The Red Haute Tango Gala also included a silent and live auction, featuring one-of-a-kind trips, dinner packages, and unique gifts. The evening also introduced Kids Korps’ newest program, HUGS FOR KIDS, in honor of Julien Hug, long-time Kids Korps supporter and recipient of the 2009 Kids Korps Leadership Award. Hugs for Kids’ mission is to ignite healthy inner growth and support the positive identify of young people by engaging youth, families and communities in educational programs, hands-on activities, and awareness.

Our special thanks go to the event sponsors who made this evening possible, our wonderful chairs Maggie and Gary Bobileff, Community Chairs Connie & Bill McNally, and Honorary Chairs Denise and Bertrand Hug, and to the Gala committee who worked for months to plan and coordinate the event.

Teen Korps Entrepreneurs worked for 2 months to raise awareness for several nonprofit environmental service organizations including: San Diego Coast Keepers, Zoological Society of San Diego, California Center for Sustainable Energy, I Love a Clean San Diego/San Diego Coast Keepers and Solana Center for Environmental Innovation.

Along with environmental education from our teens, chapter youth and community attendees learned how to save water and energy through SDG&E, made seed balls to restore natural habitats through the Wildlife Research Institute, built bicycles for youth at the Sudanese Community Center and discovered what it means to be a green business through Starbucks.

Saturday, May 9th, 2009, Kids Korps will be recipient organization for RSF Street Faire community event.

Kids Korps has been selected as the recipient community service organization for the first annual Rancho Santa Fe Street Fair, scheduled for Saturday, May 9th, 11am – 3pm. The Street Faire will be a free family event in celebration of Mother’s Day weekend.  The event is designed to attract residents and neighbors alike to Rancho Santa Fe, driving traffic to local merchants and providing families the opportunity to serve and enjoy time against the backdrop of this beautiful village. Festivities will take place along Paseo Delicias to include the Country Squire Courtyard, the patios at Mille Fleurs and Delicias, the Pantry, and possibly 6105 Paseo Delicias. Local merchants will display items for sale and gift certificates through individual booths along the sidewalk. Exhibiting merchants will donate items to be part of a Mother’s Day Dream Basket as a silent auction or raffle item raising funds for Kids Korps and their youth and family volunteer programs.
“Kids Korps is honored to be the non-profit recipient of the first annual Rancho Santa Fe Street Faire. It is a privilege to participate in this special family event and to have the opportunity to showcase selected Kids Korps projects to the community, ” said Joani Wafer, Founder and CEO of Kids Korps USA.
Along with sidewalk displays, a “Taste of the Ranch” will highlight local restaurants including Delicias and Mille Fleurs. Participating restaurants will prepare delectable finger-food appetizers for sale with percentage of proceeds also going to support Kids Korps.  For a suggested donation of $1 or more kids can make handmade cards for mom and include a seed pack from Smith & Hawken. Wear your spring best for a family or kid photo, Smith & Hawken Fashion Valley and Mille Fleur will provide a gorgeous spring backdrop for Mother’s Day family portraits by Michael Spengler at Studio M who will donate 100% of proceeds for portrait purchase to Kids Korps.
Kids Korps will set up a “Volunteer Village” with quick, easy and fun service project samples including blanket making for foster children, handmade greeting cards for the troops, and seed balls for habitat protection. The Kids Korps Volunteer Village will be part of a Rancho Santa Fe Street Faire Kid’s Zone with other youth activities.
Adults and kids alike will enjoy a variety of live music and DJ entertainment during the event.
